Founder and CEO of Gojek



(1) Nadiem Anwar Makarim was born in Singapore on July 4th, 1984. (1) He is the founder and CEO of Gojek, an online service provider and company in Indonesia. (3) Nadiem’s father is Nono Anwar Makarim and His father is an activist, lawyer and is of Minangkabau-Arabian descent.
(1) Nadiem completed Elementary School in Jakarta and Senior High School in Singapore. Shorty after that, (1) he studied at Brown University majoring in International Relations. (1) He also attended a student exchange program at the London School of Economics. Then, (1) Nadiem Makarim took the Master of Business Of Administration (MBA) program at one of the world-famous University, the Harvard Business School at Harvard University.
Nadiem Makarim began his career as a management consultant at the Mckinsey & Company in 2006 and then and (2) he chose to resign from Mckinsey & Company. (1) He continued his master's degree at Harvard University. After that, (1) Nadiem worked as Co-Founder of Zalora Indonesia and Managing Editor. (1) After he resigned from Zalora, he joined the startup company Kartuku, a company providing non-cash payment services in Indonesia.
In 2010, he founded the Gojek company. (1) He used his car garage as the first office of Gojek in South Jakarta. At that time, (1) Nadiem only had 20 motorbike drivers. (1) Nadiem also financed the company's operations from its own money.
(1) While at Mckinsey & Company, he often used motorcycle taxi rather than car. At that time, (2) it was difficult to find a motorcycle taxi. In 2014, (2) he received funding to develop Gojek from Northstar Group, an investment company from Singapore. In 2015, (1) Gojek released the first application on the mobile phone platform. Then, (2) Nadiem as CEO of Gojek chose a step to expand Gojek's business line. (1) Gojek introduced other business lines such as package delivery services (Go-Send), food ordering services (Go-Food), house cleaning services (Go-clean) and payment services (Go-Pay).
In 2016, (1) Nadiem received the The Straits Times Asian of the Year award, and was the first Indonesian to receive the award since it was first established in 2012. In May 2019, (1) Nadiem was the youngest figure from Asia to receive the 24th Nikkei Asia Prize for economic and business innovation.
In October 2019, (2) Nadiem chose to resign from the Gojek and (3) President Jokowi called him to join the government cabinet as Minister of Education and Culture from 2019 until 2024. (1)Now, Nadiem Makarim become the youngest minister in the cabinet.
